Carmarthenshire - the garden of Wales

Laugharne was the home of Dylan Thomas and the Boat House (where he wrote Under Milk Wood) is now a Heritage Centre of world repute. He and his wife Caitlin are buried in the local churchyard.

The countryside is stunning, with the Black Mountain (part of the Brecon Beacons National Park) in the East, some long sandy beaches, the wonderful valleys of the Tywi, Cothi, Teifi, Gwendraeth and Taf, lakes, hills and moorland - a paradise for nature lovers and bird watchers. The Red Kite is a common sight soaring over the countryside.

Middleton - the National Botanic Garden of Wales, the first to be built in the UK in 200 years is set in the former Middleton Hall Estate and has the Great Glasshouse as its centrepiece. It is the largest single-span glasshouse in the world and is surrounded by lakes, cascades and woodlands. It also boasts the longest herbaceous border in Britain - a must for any garden lover.

Nearby is Aberglasney - "A Garden lost in time", a 16th/17th century garden and house set in the picturesque Tywi Valley with an unusual cloister garden, a square lake and an ancient yew tunnel.

At the Millennium Coastal Park, a 20 km stretch of derelict coastline has been transformed and includes 250 acres of wetland habitat, an 18 hole Jack Nicklaus golf course (due to open in 2004), a 1,000 meter seafront promenade walk, cycleways (part of the Celtic Trail extends the length of the Park) to name but a few of the improvements.

Carmarthenshire is known for its traditional arts and crafts: potters, weavers, painters, stained glass makers and wood turners use their individual skill to produce beautiful gifts - or visit one of the art and craft galleries.

For food lovers there is a wide variety of home produced quality products many of which can be bought at the monthly farmers markets at Carmarthen and Llanelli.

A visit to the Chocolate farm to sample home made chocolates would be a treat for old and young!

Need some exercise? Walking and cycling are amongst the most popular pursuits here, simply due to the diversity and beauty of the countryside. With 27 miles of off road cycling, the routes vary from those suitable for young children to really challenging.

However, there is plenty for the golfers, riders and fishermen too. Try the dry ski slope and the toboggan run, indoor and outdoors bowls, go carting, motor racing or laser clay shooting.

Shopaholics can eat their hearts out in our towns which are as diverse as the countryside. Carmarthen and Llanelli offer the large chain stores as well as smaller individual shops and daily indoor markets. The more traditional smaller ones with unusual shops and features are fascinating to explore.

Interested in Heritage in Wales? Our culture and history have left a legacy of major proportions including a selection of divers castles, a full sized steam railway, various museums and several National Trust properties. You could even visit a pre-Roman Goldmine and go underground or try some gold panning.
